A touch of colonial Boston - with a twist - thrives in DeLand at Boston Coffeehouse. The eatery and java center accents its culinary offerings with early American atmosphere and amenities ranging from a sit-back-and-relax couch to high tech Internet access.
"We tried to create a colonial-style atmosphere," says owner Joe Valente about the 50-seat coffeehouse. Brick walls, wood floors and a reading room with television, couch and coffee table set the stage. Food and drink selections move beyond colonial-era fare, however. Lunch specials include such favorites as grilled Caesar chicken wrap; bread selections include focaccia and panini. Three- potato salad - red, white, and sweet potatoes - is popular.
"Lunch is the bulk of the business, but the heart is still the coffeehouse," says Valente, who is from Boston. More than 40 java varieties are available and customers may buy most bulk coffees for $8.99 to $9.99 a pound. Customers who'd rather stay a while can sit and chat or read the books, newspapers and magazines always available. Specialty drinks from the coffee bar include the standards cafe latte and cappuccino and more exotic fare such as Razzle - espresso, steamed milk, raspberry and almond topped with whipped cream and sprinkles. Teas, sodas, fruit drinks and flavored hot chocolate (amaretto, hazelnut) round out the menu. |
